Since its inception in 1927, CBIP is engaged in the dissemination of information regarding recent technological advancements in the disciplines of water resources, dam engineering, tunnels and underground works, rock mechanics, geosynthetics, power and renewable energy. Besides, it provides a forum for exchange of experiences, facilitating flow of technology through the organisation of symposia, seminars, workshops, training courses, both at National as well International levels, in liasion with International Organisations. The CBIP acts as Secretariat of the Indian Chapter as well as Indian National Group of many International Organisations like International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), International Water Resources Association (IWRA), International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA), World Water Council, International Association for Small Hydro (IASH), Indian National Hydropower Association (INHA) and The International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE).

Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) formerly Alternate Hydro Energy Centre, an academic department of Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee was established in the year 1982 and has celebrated 2007 as silver jubilee year is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technical education and research. HRED has been providing education and professional supports in the field of Small Hydropower (SHP) Development along with other renewable energy sources and environmental management of water bodies. The department has provided technical support to over 25 different states and central government organizations for SHP development. IPPs, government developers, manufacturers and financial institutions are utilizing its expertise support for their SHP development including Planning, Detailed Project Reports, Detailed Engineering Designs and Construction Drawings, Technical Specifications of Turn Key execution/equipment Supply, Refurbishment, Renovation and Modernization of SHP Stations, Techno-Economic Appraisal, R & D/Monitoring of Projects, Remote Sensing and GIS Based Applications policy and regulatory aspects. HRED has been imparting training to national and international field engineers and technologists through short-term training courses to create trained human resources in the field of hydropower, renewable energy and environmental aspects in addition to the regular M.Tech. and PhD degree programmes.
